This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Cruising the Archive: Queer Art and Culture in Los Angeles, 1945–1980, part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A., 1945–1980. Cruising the Archive explores the relationship between artistic practices and LGBTQ histories through artworks, objects, and archival documents culled from the collections at ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the USC Libraries. By presenting works of art alongside archival materials from the social and historical context of their production, Cruising the Archive examines the divergent, ambiguous, and sometimes humorous ways in which queer artists and activists in Los Angeles have contributed to the aesthetic and political field of cultural production.
The publication includes essays by Ann Cvetkovich, Vaginal Davis, Jennifer Doyle, Judith “Jack” Halberstam, Catherine Lord, Richard Meyer, Ulrike Müller, and Dean Spade, as well as information on artworks and archival materials included in the exhibition, reprints from early queer publications from Los Angeles including ONE Magazine, an introduction by co-curators David Evans Frantz and Mia Locks, and a map of historical sites referenced in the publication compiled by Zemula Barr. Additionally, artist Onya Hogan-Finlay has produced a limited edition poster that functions as a book jacket, featuring a photograph of the friends of ONE Archives.
