Held on occasion of the exhibition Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A., this roundtable discussion will consider recovering queer Chicana/o histories and artist’s archives. Participants will discuss how the exhibition seeks to map news directions for research and scholarship while sharing some surprising finds and unexpected connections uncovered during the process of organizing Axis Mundo. Panel participants include C. Ondine Chavoya and David Evans Frantz, the co-curators on Axis Mundo; Julia Bryan-Wilson, Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at UC Berkeley; and Richard T. Rodríguez, Associate Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at UC Riverside.

Bios
Julia Bryan-Wilson is Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of Art Workers: Radical Practice in the Vietnam War Era (2009), Fray: Art and Textile Politics (2017), and co-author, with Glenn Adamson, of Art in the Making: Artists and their Materials from the Studio to Crowdsourcing (2016). A frequent contributor to Artforum, she focuses in her criticism primarily on feminist artists, queer artists, and artists of color.
C. Ondine Chavoya is Professor of Art History and Latina/o Studies and the W. Ford Schumann Faculty Fellow in Democratic Studies at Williams College. He is the author of numerous texts on Chicana/o art, avant-garde practice, performance, experimental cinema, and social space in Southern California. He co-organized the groundbreaking exhibition Asco: Elite of the Obscure, A Retrospective, 1972–1987, with Rita Gonzalez, that opened in 2011 and traveled to the Williams College Museum of Art in 2012 and the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City in 2013. He is the co-curator with David Evans Frantz of Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A.
David Evans Frantz is curator at ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the USC Libraries. Over the past seven years his work at ONE has sought to draw greater scholarly and public attention to underrecognized histories of queer art and culture while connecting contemporary artists to the archives’ rich, yet largely unexplored, collections. In 2011 Frantz co-curated with Mia Locks the exhibition Cruising the Archive: Queer Art and Culture in Los Angeles, 1945–1980for the inaugural Pacific Standard Time initiative. He is the co-curator with C. Ondine Chavoya of Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A., presented by ONE Archives in collaboration with The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, as a part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA.
Richard T. Rodríguez is Associate Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of California, Riverside. His publications include Undocumented Desires: Fantasies of Latino Male Sexuality (forthcoming), Next of Kin: The Family in Chicano/a Cultural Politics (2009), as well as numerous articles and reviews.
