ONE Archives is excited to partner with Outfest and the Wende Museum to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Coming Out, the first (and only) LGBTQ-themed film produced in East Germany. Directed by Heiner Carow, the film deals with the process of the protagonist’s “coming out” and admitting to himself and others that he is a gay man. The film holds another unique place in world history: during its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, the Berlin Wall began to be dismantled. The film premiered in East-Berlin on November 9, 1989. When the news broke that the border between East and West had been opened, the film was stopped and the audience was informed about the event taking place outside the cinema. The vast majority of the audience demanded to see the rest of the film before joining the masses outside.
After the film there will be a post-screening discussion with Outfest UCLA Legacy Project Manager Alice Royer with guests from the Wende Museum and ONE Archives.
