The ONE Archives at the USC Libraries has been awarded a grant from the Getty Foundation to hire one undergraduate student for a summer Curatorial Research Internship. The intern will receive a stipend for a full-time, ten-week period. Internship begins June 2021.
Qualification and Eligibility Requirements
Internships are intended for members of groups underrepresented in professions related to museums and the visual arts, including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent. Intern candidates can be sought from all areas of undergraduate study and are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the visual arts. In addition, each intern candidate must meet the following eligibility criteria: (1) they must be a currently enrolled undergraduate and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2022 (Students who graduated after April 1, 2022 are also eligible but students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible); (2) they must be a resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County; and (3) they must be a United States citizen or permanent resident (non-citizen authorized to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis; also known as a "green card" holder). Students with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) status valid through the internship period are also eligible.
About the Position
The intern will work under the supervision of ONE Archives Curator, Dr. Alexis Johnson, to conduct research and write collections highlights, create videos, or help plan exhibits that will showcase and make the collection more accessible for all. The intern will be responsible for writing several articles or features, and selecting images when applicable, that highlight the collection, especially the diversity of the collection. In addition to entries selected by the Curator, the intern will be able to select several based on interest. These features may include conducting an interview with a past donor of an object. Entries will focus on specific collections (e.g., Cheryl Dunye papers) or specific objects (e.g., Jerome Caja’s Shroud of Curaid). The internship will also offer opportunities to observe and assist with other, day-to-day curatorial responsibilities, including corresponding with artists and other institutions, art handling, and cataloguing. Intern may provide assistance on two long term exhibitions: Queer Black California: Art and Politics and Sexual Science and the Imagination.
