Performance artists Ron Athey, Ulay, Harry Gamboa Jr., Nao Bustamante, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Cassils, and Narcissister will be at USC for an exciting two-day series of performances and discussions about live art.

Live art is a term used for performance art in the visual-arts realm. In this dynamic series of events, world-renowned artists and scholars will explore key questions about the medium: How do live art performances get archived, documented, or otherwise written into history and remembered? How do audiences experience live art? How is live art created?

The series of dynamic events will begin on January 28 with the performance of a new work by legendary artist Ron Athey at the alternative arts space Human Resources in downtown Los Angeles. On January 29, we will present a full day of performances and interactive dialogues with major artists such as Ulay (who had a longtime collaboration with Marina Abramović), feminist experimentalist Lynn Hershman Leeson, Harry Gamboa Jr. of the Chicano art collective ASCO, visual artist using the body Cassils, and Brooklyn-based dancer/artist/activist Narcissister in conversation with USC faculty members and other scholars who specialize in performance, experimental film, or media documentation. Rebecca Schneider, the author of Performance Remains: Art and War in Times of Theatrical Reenactment, will offer the keynote speech. A final performance and reception will be held at ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the USC Libraries.

Presented by USC Visions and Voices: The Arts and Humanities Initiative. Organized by Amelia Jones and the USC Roski School of Art and Design.
