Arts on Sunset

Event Details

ONE Archives at the USC Libraries is pleased to present a yearlong public art presentation for the City of West Hollywood's 67 foot digital billboard, the Sunset Spectacular, organized by Jeanne Vaccaro.

Designed by architect Tom Wiscombe, the innovative full-motion digital tower merges architectural excellence with diverse public art and experiential programming to create an exciting new destination on Sunset Blvd. The cornerstone of the Sunset Spectacular is "Arts on Sunset," an ongoing public project developed by Orange Barrel Media and curated by Diana Nawi.

Currently on view is experimental animation by Aimee Goguen. Born in Burbank, Goguen has Hollywood on the mind. Her father did pyrotechnic stunts for the film industry. "Title Sequence" (2022) is Goguen's homage to the classic cinema that shaped her queer youth in Los Angeles. Inspired by the exquisite corpse-like exercises that helped her learn animation, "Title Sequence" isolates the fonts embedded in our cultural movie memory, making the title the main event and Goguen the star of the show. Also on view is Debbie’s Barium Swallow, an animated short story adapted from cult lesbian novelist Laurie Weeks. Morphing from inanimate object to non-living entity to human to flower, we watch Debbie shape-shift through puberty and into early adulthood feeling her emotions as species unknown.

Goguen's work screens at the top of every hour alongside video by Cauleen Smith and Pipilotti Rist. Stay tuned for more presentations by Eve Fowler, Nao Bustamante, Lukaka Branfman-Verissimo, and more representing the ONE Archives on the Sunset Spectacular all year long.
