USC Libraries Primary Sources Research Award

June 14, 2013

Attention USC Undergraduates:

The USC Libraries is excited to announce the first annual USC Libraries Primary Sources Research Award recognizing excellence in the use of primary sources. Undergraduate students are invited to submit papers or projects they have completed at USC for a credit bearing class or independent study during the Spring, Summer, and Fall semester 2013. Work must be strongly related to primary sources held in the libraries’ collections, including materials housed at ONE Archives.

Find more information on submitting and the award below and by clicking here.

Submission Guidelines:

To be eligible for consideration submissions must take the form of an analytical or creative essay or a research paper.

The work must have been completed while the author was an undergraduate at USC during the 2013 calendar year (Spring semester 2013, Summer semester 2013, Fall semester 2013) and in connection with credit-bearing coursework or independent study at USC.

The work can be in any field of study, but must be based largely or entirely on primary sources held in USC’s Special Collections or other USC Libraries repositories with primary source holdings (Cinematic Arts Library, East Asian Library, ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives, Architecture and Fine Arts Library, Music Library, etc). Materials retrieved from the Digital Library qualify as long as the original primary source material is held in a USC repository.

Submissions are judged on quality of research, quality of analysis and interpretation, and quality of writing and documentation. Special attention is given to the extent and effectiveness of the use of primary sources.

Papers must be submitted electronically by 5 PM on January 21, 2014 using the submission form.

The Award:

Funding for the awards has been provided by Catherine Quinlan, Dean of the USC Libraries.

A panel of faculty and community experts will judge the submissions and select a winner and an honorable mention that will be announced at an award reception. Winners will also be notified two weeks prior to the awards ceremony.

The winner receives an award in the amount of $500, and will become a USC Libraries Research Fellow and invited to participate as a member of the future jury. The winner has to be present at the award reception on April 24, 2014.

The honorable mention receives an award in the amount of $200.

All winning papers will be published and featured in a dedicated Libguide and on the USC Libraries’ blog LibWire, and will be added to the University Archives.
